I want all my clients to know that, at the end of our journey together, they will need very little to no makeup. It’s attainable and I do see this happen all the time. Oftentimes I am pleasantly surprised when someone says “Hey Kim, guess what? I only have on sun block and blush today!” All of my hard work is especially worthwhile on those days. Our correction work being done; maintenance from there on out will be fairly easy and painless!

What does “correction” mean when we talk about flawless skin? One huge component of it consists of correcting discoloration. I always say, ‘Think of a baby’s skin. It’s luminous, right?’ It’s luminous because there’s no shadowing caused by hyperpigmentation. So, to all the people out there who think that getting rid of wrinkles is the way to stay looking young, I say there’s more to it than that. In my opinion, even-colored, luminous skin will carry you a lot further on the aging trail than botox and fillers. The bonus here is that when you work on discoloration, chances are you will also be helping to prevent the collagen and elastin from aging as quickly as it would without such treatments.

There are many ways to help correct hyperpigmentation and / or sun damaged skin. I chuckle a little bit when people refer to their spots as age spots and freckles. IT’S SUN DAMAGE people! So the first step in this correction process is making sure everyone understands the importance of wearing a good sun block. All sun block is not created the same. I like my clients to wear the one with the highest zinc percentage as possible. The great news is there are many companies that offer the higher percentage without making you look like you’re wearing a white masque. The other common problem with sun block is that people don’t understand what the SPF number means. The easiest way to understand it is to know that the SPF number isn’t a measure of strength; it’s a measure of time. So, do pick a high SPF to avoid many re-applications but pick the high zinc for the strength part (the best coverage).

The next step is getting rid of the existing ugly spots. There are many ways to do that but the fastest and most effective way (for me) has been using Limelight (IPL/photo facial.) Of course, this isn’t appropriate for all skin tones but for fair to medium tones it’s the way to go for fast, incredible correction. For darker skin tones and for melasma, I generally recommend Obagi Nuderm and laser genesis together.

For all my clients, a good home care regimen is my recommendation. I am a big fan of retin A for overall healthy skin, and a topical antioxidant along with a daily application of sun block. Don’t forget the chest, hands, arms, etc. Otherwise, eventually you too will be in to see me getting those areas corrected.

Let your skin be the liar for you about your age. Let’s face it, past the age of 25 we don’t really want to look our age. Be the epitome of a graceful little white lie with luminous skin. I will be your guide at SkinFuzion!

Sagging skin is widely considered a sign of aging but many women often end up with a tummy that won’t “snap” back after a pregnancy while sagging under the arms, thighs and especially under the chin after weight loss is also very common. If any of you are like me, you’ve “yoyo’d” with weight then found it to be a cruel joke to finally get skinny but end up with saggy skin! Whatever the case may be, now is like no other time in the history of skin care to consider an effective, non-surgical approach to finally getting, not only the “snap” back in your skin, but to also maintain and promote collagen remodeling.

Why do I say it’s a time like no other? It’s a time like no other because we live during a time when everybody is feeling the pressure to maintain healthy skin. Every day we are constantly bombarded with images from today’s media filled with perfect faces and perfect bodies. Plus, it’s the worst economic time that most of us can remember. These two issues make Titan, the infrared, non-surgical laser treatment, the best option available. Titan allows us to spend significantly less money than the cost of surgery, it allows peace of mind due to the fact that there is virtually no risk involved, and it works.

I always say, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of correction.’ With that being said, the best thing any of us can do is to have Titan done from time to time before the sagging begins, or at the very least, at the first sign of skin laxity. I’ll tell you the same thing I tell my skin care clients… compare your skin to a house. Then imagine that Titan is a tool which ensures that the foundations will never crack thus giving you the peace of mind that you won’t see cracks in the walls or experience other structural support problems for a very long time. We can take the hand of the clock and make sure it doesn’t move forward very much or at all. I have witnessed this with my clients who are proactive age preventers. They look better than they did when we started many years ago. However, I do also have many clients who haven’t been quite as proactive and now, of course, need correction. Titan can help tighten lax skin in varying degrees for everyone.

I am asked almost every day how much tightening one will get and how long it will last. The answer to both of those questions depends a great deal on your age and your lifestyle. There’s no “life” to Titan as there is with fillers like Juvaderm or Botox. Titan will work better and last longer for those who avoid smoke, sun exposure, excessive alcohol and stress. The second question I’m always asked is if the treatment hurts. The answer is no.With all of that being said, there’s no time like now to get started looking as good as the women we see on those magazines every time we’re standing in the grocery store checkout lines. It’s a Hollywood secret available to anyone at a very affordable price!

As far back as my career in skin care goes, there isn’t a day that goes by that the word wrinkle doesn’t come out of my own or my client’s mouth. Wrinkles or static lines are one of the many signs that our skin is in fact aging. As with any sign of aging skin, there are many contributing factors to how fast we age. All of the brilliant scientists continue to work feverishly to find the one reason. All still seem to agree on a few major contributors: sun exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, excessive stress, and of course, your genes. The great news is that because of all of those people working to discover the fountain of youth, we have come a long way. All you have to do is look at a picture of your own mom or grandma when they were the age you are now, and look at how much better we look now. What that tells us is that the pendulum has shifted; age being more extrinsic versus intrinsic one (genes). Or shall I say that we are so much more aware of how to control and slow extrinsic aging. When my career began about 14 years ago, it was thought that 80 percent of how we age was genetically controlled, leaving only 20 percent within our control. The number over all these years has shifted to 20 percent genetic, to 80 percent extrinsic. ISN’T THAT GREAT NEWS?

So, how do we control aging? How do we ensure that we prevent and even reverse lines and wrinkles? Start with the basics: sun block, topical antioxidants to prevent free radical damage, and a good home care regimen to help reverse the already visible signs of aging. Those are basics, but for those of us that want to pull out the “bigger guns” (so to speak), we go get laser treatments done. There are so many laser options, many people get confused about where they should begin.

When we talk about treating deeper wrinkles, the best option is a deep penetrating wavelength, such as the Titan laser. Hold the hand on your skin’s aging clock. Let laser genesis be one key tool! When treating fine lines (which are a bit more superficial), then Laser Genesis is a fantastic laser. Through a series of treatments, we can soften lines and larger pores, and get improvement in any discoloration. Laser Genesis targets microvasculature and stimulates collagen production, and improves wrinkles by gently heating the dermis; corrects diffuse redness, rosacea, improves skin texture, and shrinks pore size.

A peer reviewed journal shows evidence of erythema reduction and new collagen formation in the papillary dermis (Archives of Dermatology, Nov 2004); all with ZERO down time! Zero down time being a key reason this laser is a true work horse in my clinic. Clients leave with healthy, glowing skin knowing that within several treatments, all of the imperfections will look better and they are doing something for their skin that will keep them from needing more expensive, more invasive treatments down the road.

My Rosacea Treatment Philosophy

Let me start with a quote from one of my clients: “Having a rosacea problem, I was looking for an alternative to the pharmaceutical approach. Kimberly knew exactly what to do and had very satisfying answers to the many questions I had. Currently I know someone who opted for the prescriptions treatment, yet the results I was able to get have far surpassed the alternative. I would recommend skinfusion to anyone considering skin therapy, my level of satisfaction is very high.” The only credit I can take from this client is that I knew what laser to use for people with rosacea, but the hero is the laser and especially the people behind creating this technology. The client who wrote the testimonial is among many with similar stories.

By the time people see me they have usually been to a number of other professionals who have recommended treatments that haven’t been very successful. One of the first things I tell people with rosacea is that this isn’t a quick fix, or a fix at all for that matter. Rosacea as far as I know, is not curable but it is treatable. As long as people know going in that this will be a process, then I think they are usually happy with the results they get along the treatment route with laser.

There are many possible contributing factors to rosacea. I have heard everything from one’s body not being able to balance temperature, to bacteria, to wrong products, to heredity. Whether one or all of these things are true, I know that the laser will help the symptoms, which include redness and accompanying pustules. By targeting the microvasculature, the heat from this laser energy is collected in the vessels, and disintegrates them. This is done because swelling of the blood vessels is partially what creates the redness of the face. The heat is also effective in killing bacteria that may be responsible for acne like lesions. Most people will see improvement with one treatment but I generally recommend starting with a package of 6 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart. These packages of 6 are $1,440.00 then after this initial package, I only charge $175.00 per session. The reason I price treatments this way is to ensure that clients are committed to at least 6 treatments then feel comfortable knowing that ongoing (as needed) treatment will be affordable to them. I use one of or a combination of the ND Yag laser and IPL.

To get the best results possible it would be completely irresponsible not to recommend a few changes at home, including switching to mild skin care products, avoiding unprotected sun exposure, alcohol and excessive heat and cold. One of the best product lines I have found for rosacea is Innovative Skincare for Rosacea. For those that may find the line to be a bit pricey, there are a few simple things that can make a huge difference, including avoiding sunscreens with chemicals, and getting a very mild cleanser like plain white Dove. Do keep the skin well protected from the sun and well hydrated.

So, for those who have been long time sufferers, the best approach to treating facial redness and rosacea (in my opinion) is laser treatment and proper skincare. Please do keep in mind that finding someone with extensive understanding and practical application of laser and skin interaction is obviously a very important consideration when choosing any treatment for your skin.
